Orie Sponsors Bill to Reinstate Ban on Gaming Contributions

As part of her continued effort to reform Pennsylvania's gaming laws, Senator Jane Orie (R-Allegheny) has introduced legislation to reinstate the state's ban on political contributions by gaming interests.

Orie's legislation comes in response to a State Supreme Court decision last week overturning the ban.  The court ruled that the law violated free speech and was too broad in its application.  Orie's legislation would correct language in the law to address those concerns.

"While I understand the decision of the court and the minor contradiction between the intent language and the substantive language of the law that banned all contributions, I must disagree with the proposition that allowing limited contributions will not affect the public confidence in the law," Orie said.  "The court even recognizes that others states have adopted total bans on political contributions and they have been upheld."

Orie said that banning contributions by casino owners and others associated with the gaming industry will help to stop corruption and the appearance of impropriety.

"Gaming is here to stay in Pennsylvania, but we have to do everything we can to make sure we have strong laws in place to regulate it and to protect the public," Orie said.  "Banning contributions by casino operators is a common sense measure that will help to accomplish this goal."
